Neatly put, there is a book called Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott that is a great start for explaining this. I laughed at the end

What does a dimension have to do with a universe? I thought alternate universes were an extension of space, and therefor confined to the 4d world we are capable of perceiving. That is of course assuming that a universe works like a planet or a galaxy, and it is just a floating orb out in the cosmos surrounded by similarly floating orbs that, while collections of them exist, are still extremely far apart. After all, the matter to initiate this universe must have come from somewhere, and it is logical to assume it came from another universe, or even universes, which may in fact be little more than floating orbs getting squeezed through the barriers of space they are confined to by whatever laws exist for them.

This is implying that other universes however, are not entirely physical and do not exist in parallel, but simply by the possibility of their existence they exist in some quantum continuum. This idea is foreign to me, because if one were able to travel between said “dimensions” or universes, would said universe actually exist or just be a replica of their origin universe tweaked to their liking? Would there be any way to prove if it was or wasn’t?
